Working with AGA – We Value our Partnership

SGA would like to congratulate Ron Jibson, Chairman, President & CEO, Questar, for being elected to Chair the American Gas Association in 2013. Ron and our Chairman, Arthur Corbin, President & CEO, Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia, serve together on the GTI Board of Directors.

Arthur and the SGA Leadership values partnerships and Arthur recently sent these talking points to Ron in support of his five priorities at AGA for 2013:

A.  Extend the natural gas opportunity to more Americans by upgrading and expanding our pipeline infrastructure

  • SGA Accelerated Replacement Programs – a webinar series that starts March 28
  • With the increased construction activity associated with upgrading and expanding our pipeline infrastructure, more and more operators are turning to 3rd party inspectors:

-  SGA conducted a benchmarking survey on issues around the use of 3rd party inspections – Feb 2013

- SGA’s Distribution Construction O&M Committee is hosting a conference call to discuss the results of this survey

  • SGA’s Operating Conference & Exhibits, July 22-24 in Houston – this important topic will be discussed at the engineering, distribution, transmission and pipeline construction management roundtables associated with this conference

B.  Expand the direct use of natural gas in homes and businesses, integrating high efficiency technologies such as combined heat and power with smart grid technology and energy management tools.

  • SGA Marketing Section will focus on these topics at:

- Marketing Executives Roundtable (part of the Management Conference in April in New Orleans)

- Marketing and Customer Experience Conference (August)

  • Many of these topics are part of on-going discussions on the SGA Utility Best Practice monthly webinars (co-sponsored with APGA)

C.  Put more natural gas vehicles on the road to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cutting consumer costs in half and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

  • SGA has focused on best practices and lessons learned for NGV fleet operations with our new NGV Operations Committee. This committee hosted two workshops in 2012 and have a roundtable scheduled for 2013.
  • Developing and growing the market for NGVs will be a key topic included in SGA conferences and workshops throughout the year

D.  Enhance cyber-security, asking companies to subscribe to an evolving action plan to be better prepared for a range of threats.

  • The SGA Executive Conference this past November featured a presentation by Dean Fox, VP, Cyber/IO Strategy, Systems Engineering & Information Solutions Group (SEIS), URS
  • This presentation was video-taped and was broadcast to all SGA members in January 2013
  • SGA participates on the AGA Cyber-Security “task force”

 E.  Invest in the next generation of natural gas technology such as fuel cells and microgrids.
